- AIFF: Audio Interchange File Format. An Apple audio format.
- Announcer Read: Not as in demand as in year’s past. The read sounds like well, an announcer.
- Cans: Headphones. I never call them that but some people do.
- Compression: The process of reducing a signal’s dynamic range
- Conversational Read: THE read direction of the moment. It can mean different things to different people. Mostly, sounding like a real person when delivering copy. When you nail this you are gold!
- Copy: The script.
- CRM: Customer Relationship Management. Highly recommended to keep track of your client base.
- DAW: Digital Audio Workstation. Used for any audio recordings. For voiceover, the DAW consists of a computer, interface, and audio editing software.
- db: decibel. A noise floor of -60 or less is industry standard.
- Demo: Your voiceover calling card. They are usually 60 seconds or less and should showcase your best “reads”. They are crucial to your career.
- Dynamic Range: The difference between the loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal.

- Gain: The amount of input level going into your DAW system. More gain will make your recording volume (output) louder.
- IVR: Interactive Voice Response
- Mic: Pronounced “Mike”. The Microphone.
- SAG: Screen Actors Guild
- Slate: Slating, introducing yourself to the project. Check the project’s specifications (specs) for the preferred slating format.
- SOT: An acronym for Sound on Tape. It is the sound or video bite that will accompany the voiceover.
- Track or Tracking: The process of recording the audio file.
- Voiceover or Voice Over : The voice of an unseen narrator speaking (as in a motion picture or television commercial) b : the voice of a visible character (as in a motion picture) expressing unspoken thoughts. 2 : a recording of a voice-over.
- WAV: Wave File, called wav due to file extension. A standard digital audio file format. Most production companies will want this file format. Note that it is much larger than an MP3.
- Rest: Quality sleep is your friend!

- Warm up: Be sure to warm up your voice with trills, singing scales, tongue twisters, etc. Don’t skip this step. Your sessions will go much smoother!
- Water: Water! Water Water! The very best thing you can do for our voice is to drink a ton of water. 🙂
